Tried-and-True Lasagna Recipe Courtesy of Dream Dinners Franchise

Lasagna noodles can be layered with just about any filling, but this recipe channels the classic flavors of Italian cuisine using tomato, cheese and herb combinations of parsley, basil and garlic.

There’s never a more welcome dish on the table than a bubbling, piping hot lasagna, so preparing this dish in multiples can ensure that you’ll have it on hand when the craving hits. Tried and True Lasagna (Serves 6)


Non-stick cooking spray

1 pound of extra lean ground beef

2 cups of store-bought marinara sauce

1, 15 ounce can of diced, roasted tomatoes (drained)

1 cup of roasted red peppers (diced)

¼ cup of tomato paste

2 teaspoons of garlic (minced)

2 tablespoons of dried parsley

1 tablespoon of Italian seasoning

1 tablespoon of dried basil

1 tablespoon of sugar

¼ cup of nonfat egg substitute

1 cup of nonfat cottage cheese

1 cup of grated parmesan cheese

¾ cup of part skim ricotta cheese

1 teaspoon of kosher salt

8 lasagna noodles

2 cups of shredded skim mozzarella cheese


  1. Preheat the oven to 375 °F
  2. Spray one 9×13 inch baking dish with nonstick cooking spray
  3. Heat a large skillet over medium-high heat
  4. Add the ground beef to the skillet and cook for 10 minutes, or until browned
  5. Drain off any excess fat from the beef
  6. In a large bowl, combine the cooked ground beef, marinara sauce, tomatoes, roasted peppers, tomato paste, garlic, parsley, Italian seasoning, basil and sugar and stir until incorporated
  7. In a separate bowl, combine the egg substitute, cottage cheese, parmesan, ricotta, salt and pepper and stir until incorporated
  8. Layer the mixtures into the prepared baking dish in the following order
    • ½ cup of the sauce mixture
    • 4 lasagna noodles
    • 1 ½ cups of the cheese mix
    • 1 cup of mozzarella cheese
  9. Repeat step 8, beginning with the noodles and ending with the cheese.
  10. Cover the dish with aluminum foil sprayed with nonstick cooking spray and bake for 20 minutes
  11. Remove the foil and bake for 15 more minutes, or until the cheese is melted
  12. Let lasagna cool for 5-10 minutes

Once the lasagna is cooled, it’s ready to serve! Luckily for you, this recipe is freezer-friendly. Just cover the baking dish with plastic wrap and aluminum foil, label and date the dish and finally put it into the freezer for up to one month. When you’re ready to cook the lasagna, take it out of the freezer, thaw at room temperature and cook as directed above.
