Recipe of the Month: Dream Macaroni and Cheese

If macaroni and cheese is among your child’s favorite meals, then you’re in luck! No need to buy those prepackaged macaroni and cheese products that are full of preservatives and tend to be pricy. This month, our recipe of the month is our very own, homemade macaroni and cheese.

This classic can be difficult to make on your own or without a package, but by following the outlined recipe, courtesy of Dream Dinners… Life Just Got Easier!, your dish will not only taste delicious, but it can be made stress-free.

Dream Macaroni and Cheese (Serves 6)
This good old American recipe bakes up with a crisp, seasoned topping. This recipe can stay fresh in your freezer for up to 3 months and should be thawed before cooked.

Ingredients  

2 cups dry macaroni pasta

3 tablespoons low-fat yogurt-based spread or butter

2 tablespoons all-purpose flour

1 dashes hot chili pepper sauce

1 teaspoons kosher salt

2 cups nonfat milk

2 cups American cheese (cubed)

1 cups seasoned bread crumbs

Cooking spray

1 skillet

19×13-inch baking dishes

Directions

  1. Preheat oven to 325 °F.
  2. Cook the macaroni according to the package directions.
  3. With the stove on medium heat, melt the butter in a large skillet.
  4. Add flour to the skillet, blending it with the butter until golden brown (about 5 minutes).
  5. Add hot sauce and salt to the skillet.
  6. Pour the milk into the skillet and simmer until thickened and bubbly.
  7. Add the cheese cubes and stir until cheese is melted.
  8. Add the macaroni and stir until evenly coated in cheese.
  9. Pour the macaroni and cheese into your baking dish.
  10. Sprinkle bread crumbs on top.
  11. Place your dish into the oven, uncovered, for 1 hour or until knife comes out clean when inserted.
  12. Enjoy!
